Puppy Proofing Your Home Basics

In this lesson, we will discuss the essential steps you need to take to create a safe environment for your new furry friend. Bringing a puppy into your home is an exciting time, but it also comes with the responsibility of monitoring them to provide  supervision to ensure their safety and well-being.

 

 

Let’s dive into the key strategies for puppy-proofing your living space.

1. Remove Hazards: Start by identifying and removing any potential hazards in your home that could harm your puppy. This includes small objects that they could swallow, toxic plants, electrical cords, and sharp objects. Keep all cleaning supplies, medications, and chemicals out of reach.

 

2. Secure Your Space: Puppies are curious and love to explore, so it’s important to secure areas where they could get into trouble. Use baby gates to block off rooms or areas that are off-limits. Make sure your trash cans have secure lids to prevent your puppy from getting into garbage.

 

3. Hide Cords and Wires: Puppies love to chew on things, including cords and wires. To prevent electrical hazards and potential injuries, secure cords out of reach or use cord protectors to cover them.

 

4. Create a Safe Zone: Designate a safe space for your puppy where they can rest and feel secure. This could be a cozy crate or a comfortable bed in a quiet corner of your home. Make sure this area is free from potential dangers and provides access to water and toys.

 

5. Supervise and Train: While puppy-proofing your home is essential, supervision and training are also key components of keeping your puppy safe. Keep an eye on your puppy at all times, especially in the early stages when they are still learning the rules. Use positive reinforcement and consistency to teach them boundaries and what is acceptable behavior. Always ready to reward the good behaviors you want!
